Terrazzo effect with Aqua Resin

In recent years, the terrazzo effect has won the hearts of crafters, designers and DIY enthusiasts alike. Its textures, dotted with coloured chips, bring a vintage touch reminiscent of the 1970s while fitting perfectly into modern interior aesthetics.

If you love natural materials, DIY projects and the charm of handmade objects, discover a simple and surprising technique: the DIY terrazzo effect made with Aqua Resin plaster.

TL;DR: The terrazzo effect is achieved by mixing Aqua Resin plaster with coloured chips (Aqua Chips), pouring into silicone moulds and sanding the surface. Sets in 30 minutes, safe, natural and no experience required. Ready-to-use Terrazzo Aqua Kits are available in three colour variants: White Carrara, Lava Black and Terracotta Roma.

What is the terrazzo effect?

Originally a decorative floor finish, terrazzo (or Venetian terrazzo) combines fragments of marble, granite and glass in a cement base, polished to create elegant, durable surfaces. Today that aesthetic has found a new life in the world of design, home décor and creative crafting.

The pattern is unmistakable: a smooth, homogeneous base dotted with small, irregularly shaped coloured chips. The result is harmonious yet dynamic, sophisticated yet playful — the perfect combination for countless handmade projects.

Why choose Aqua Resin instead of cement or epoxy resin?

Creating terrazzo effect surfaces with cement or epoxy resin can be complicated, time-consuming and require professional tools. With Aqua Resin, everything is easier: it is a natural, non-toxic mineral plaster powder that mixes with water just like ordinary plaster.

Easy to prepare, simple to colour, workable by hand and yielding a smooth, elegant, ceramic-like finish. Perfect even if you have never tried this technique before.

The advantages of Aqua Resin for the terrazzo effect

Choosing Aqua Resin for your terrazzo projects opens up a world of possibilities:

  • Safe — no odours or toxic substances, 100% natural
  • Sets quickly, in approximately 30–40 minutes

  • Colours easily with Aqua Pigment (concentrated pigments in 16 colours) or Aqua Glitter
  • Can be finished with Aqua Shield for a waterproof, glossy effect
  • Delivers a result that looks artisanal yet professional

How to make the terrazzo effect with Aqua Resin: step-by-step guide

1. Prepare the coloured chips

You have two options: make the chips from scratch or use ready-to-use Aqua Chips. To make them yourself: pour Aqua Resin coloured with Aqua Pigment into a thin layer, leave to dry for 30 minutes, then break into irregular pieces. The more colours you prepare, the richer your terrazzo will be.

2. Prepare the base

In a bowl, mix Aqua Resin with water at a 100:30 ratio until you get a smooth, fluid cream. For a dark base, use Aqua Resin Black or Aqua Resin Terracotta Roma directly — already pigmented, no extra colour needed.

3. Add the chips

Stir the chips into the mixture, or place them directly in the mould before pouring. Chips mixed in = even distribution throughout; chips placed on the mould base = concentrated on the finished surface.

4. Pour into the mould

Pour carefully into the silicone mould, tapping gently to release air bubbles. Leave to set for about 30 minutes.

5. Demould and sand

Remove the piece from the mould and use fine sandpaper (grit 180–400) to sand the surface and reveal the chips. This is the step that brings the terrazzo to life — chips emerge as if embedded in the base.

6. Apply the finish (optional)

Apply a coat of Aqua Shield to make the surface waterproof and glossy. Essential for coasters, trays and any object that will come into contact with liquids.

For metallic details on raised edges or borders, use Aqua Metal (Gold, Silver or Copper) applied with a brush on the dry piece.

Creative tips for a terrazzo that stands out

  • Use chips that contrast with the base for a bold look (e.g. coloured chips on a Lava Black base)
  • Experiment with geometric chip shapes (triangles, diamonds, irregular)
  • Sand only part of the piece for a sanded/raw texture contrast
  • Keep leftover chips for future projects — they last a long time
  • Add Gold or Silver Leaf after sanding for precious finishing touches
  • Work with harmonious palettes or dare with unexpected colour combinations

FAQ — DIY Terrazzo Effect with Aqua Resin

What is the terrazzo effect and how do you make it at home?

The terrazzo effect is a decorative technique that creates surfaces dotted with coloured chips on a smooth base, inspired by traditional Venetian terrazzo. At home, it is made by mixing Aqua Resin with Aqua Chips, pouring into silicone moulds and sanding the hardened surface to reveal the chips.

What is the difference between terrazzo effect with plaster versus cement or epoxy resin?

Cement requires professional tools and long working times. Epoxy resin releases VOCs and is toxic. Aqua Resin is a natural, non-toxic mineral plaster that mixes simply with water. It sets in 30 minutes, sands easily and requires no experience.

How long does it take to make a terrazzo effect object?

With Aqua Resin the whole process takes about 60–90 minutes: 30 minutes for setting, plus time for sanding and the optional Aqua Shield finish. The chips can be prepared in advance.

What are Aqua Chips and what are they used for?

Aqua Chips are ready-to-use decorative chips made of Aqua Resin, available in 7 colours. They are added directly to the mix before pouring to achieve the terrazzo effect without making chips from scratch.

Is there a ready-to-use kit to make a DIY terrazzo effect?

Yes. The Terrazzo Aqua Kits include premium alpha plaster and Aqua Chips in one box, available in White Carrara, Lava Black and Terracotta Roma.

How do you protect and waterproof a terrazzo effect creation?

After sanding, apply a coat of Aqua Shield. It makes the surface waterproof, glossy and moisture-resistant — ideal for coasters, trays and candle holders.
