Hand casting
“What we touch with love lasts forever.”
I deeply believe that every creation has a soul. And when I talk about hand casting, I am not only talking about technique: I am talking about emotion taking shape, a gesture becoming sculpture, a memory you can hold in your hands.
If you are looking for how to make a DIY hand cast, you are in the right place. In this article, I will guide you step by step, with practical tips, safe materials and result-oriented solutions. Whether you are a DIY enthusiast, an artist, a family or someone looking for an original gift idea, here you will find everything you need.
Why make a hand cast
A hand cast is much more than a simple creative project.
A memory that lasts over time
It can be the cast of a couple, a family, a parent with their child, or intertwined hands in a special moment. It is a way to stop time.
An emotional gift idea
Perfect for anniversaries, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, births, baby showers. “Every piece is an emotion taking shape.”
An experience to share together
It is not only the final result that matters, but the moment of creation. Mixing, immersing the hands, waiting with excitement. It is an activity that brings people together and strengthens the bond.
The materials for making a perfect hand cast
To obtain a professional result even at home, you need quality materials. I always recommend safe, non-toxic and easy-to-use products, because creativity should be free and calm.
1. Alginate for the mold
Alginate is the material that captures every detail: skin lines, nails, folds, rings. It is essential for obtaining a faithful reproduction.
It is mixed with water, the hands are immersed and in just a few minutes it solidifies, creating a perfect negative mold.
2. Mineral resin for casting
To fill the mold, you need a resistant, white, smooth material capable of reproducing the finest details. This is where our Aqua Resin comes in.
I recommend using the kit you can find on our shop,

The result? A white, smooth, compact surface with an elegant porcelain effect.
The Love Cast Kit includes everything you need to create a hand cast for a couple or family.
How to make a hand cast step by step
“Creativity is a journey, not a destination.” And I will guide you through every stage.
Step 1: Preparation
Prepare everything before you start. The working time is limited, so having every tool within reach is essential.
Protect the work surface and choose a comfortable position for the person who will immerse their hands.
Step 2: Preparing the alginate
Mix the alginate with water following the indicated proportions. Work quickly but precisely, avoiding lumps.
Pour the mixture into the bucket.
Step 3: Immersing the hands
Immerse the hands in the chosen position. It can be:
-
Intertwined hands
-
Hands holding each other
-
An adult hand wrapping around a small hand
-
Hands forming a heart
Wait about 3–5 minutes until complete solidification.
Step 4: Removing the hands
Gently move the fingers to create a small separation and slowly slide the hands out. Now you have the perfect negative mold.
Step 5: Preparing Aqua Resin
Mix Aqua Resin with cold water in a 100:30 ratio. Mix until you obtain a smooth and homogeneous compound.
For an even more resistant and waterproof result, you can consider using Aqua Shield as an additive, as indicated in the technical guidelines.
Slowly pour the mixture into the mold, making sure to fill every detail.
Step 6: Waiting and demolding
After about 30 minutes, the creation will have hardened. Gently break the alginate mold to reveal the sculpture.
It is always a magical moment.
How to obtain a professional result
Here I want to share with you some practical tips that make the difference.
Avoid air bubbles
-
Pour the resin slowly.
-
Lightly tap the container to bring any bubbles to the surface.
Pay attention to the hand position
Before immersing the hands, test the pose. A position that is too complex can make extraction difficult.
Finishing
After complete drying, 24 hours for full solidification, you can:
-
Lightly sand any imperfections
-
Paint with acrylic colors
-
Add a decorative base
Creative ideas to personalize the cast
“Uniqueness is the detail that makes the difference.”
Here are some ideas to make your cast even more special:
Gold or bronze effect
Apply metallic waxes or pigments for an elegant and artistic effect.
Personalized wooden base
Add a small plaque with names and the date of the event.
Total white minimal version
Leave the sculpture in its natural white color: the porcelain effect of Aqua Resin is already refined on its own.
Colored version
You can add pigments directly into the mixture to obtain customized shades.
Hand casting with children and babies
When working with little ones, safety comes first.
Aqua Resin is a natural, water-based, non-toxic and safe resin, as stated in the official documentation. This makes it perfect for creative family activities.
Useful tips:
-
Always stay calm and create a relaxed atmosphere.
-
Prepare everything in advance.
-
Choose a moment when the child or baby is relaxed.
Common mistakes to avoid
Even experienced people can make mistakes. Here are the most common ones:
-
Wrong water/resin proportions
-
Mixture not homogeneous
-
Molds that are too thin
-
Removing the hands too early
Patience is part of the creative process. “Imperfections make every creation unique.”
